St. Patrick’s Day Cocktails and Toasts

The tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in honor of the proud mutineers of Irish slaves who fought a failed rebellion against their colonial masters on March 17, 1768. Ever since, in true Irish spirit, St. Patrick’s Day has been a public holiday on Montserrat – the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. There are two countries in the world where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday: Ireland and Montserrat.

“The Montserrat”

2 parts     Tullamore D.E.W. Original
1 part       Cloudy apple juice
1                Brown sugar cube
Dash         Angostura Bitters
1                Large orange ‘Horses Neck’ twist

Muddle brown sugar cube, bitters and small amount of Tullamore D.E.W. in the bottom of a rocks glass. Fill glass with cubed ice. Stir to dilute, adding Tullamore D.E.W. slowly. Add more ice as necessary. Afterwards, add apple juice and garnish with a ‘horses neck’ orange twist.

Apple D.E.W.

1 part      Tullamore D.E.W. original
3 parts    Pressed Apple Juice
1               Lemon wedge

Add Tullamore D.E.W. into a tall ice-filled glass. Top up with pressed apple juice. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Optional twist: In the cold-weather months, try adding a dash of Angostura bitters for a hint of warm apple-pie spice notes.

 The Irish Manhattan

The Irish Manhattan Hi ResIngredients
1 3/4 oz.  Tullamore D.E.W. Original
1/2 oz.     Sweet vermouth
1/4 oz.     Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
Dash        Angostura bitter
Dash        Orange bitters
1               Orange zest
1               Maraschino cherry

Stir the ingredients together quickly over ice. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Zest orange twist over surface of drink, spiral and drop into the glass. Garnish with Maraschino cherry.

 The Barmbrack Sour

Barmbrack Sour Hi ResIngredients
1 3/4 oz.         Tullamore D.E.W. Original
1 bar spoon   Quality apricot jam
3/4 oz.            Fresh lemon juice
1 pinch           Cinnamon powder
2 dashes         Angostura bitters
1/2 oz.             Egg white
1 bar spoon    Castor sugar
Garnish           Crushed toasted pecans and a light dusting of freshly grated nutmeg


Add all ingredients except garnish to shaker and dry shake without ice. Add ice and shake hard. Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass and add garnish.

The 1829

The 1829 Hi ResIngredients
1 1/4 oz.   Tullamore D.E.W. 10 Year Old Single Malt
1 oz.          Freshly squeezed orange juice
3/4 oz.      Sweet vermouth
3/4 oz.      Boudier maraschino liqueur
1                Maraschino cherry to garnish

Shake all ingredients together. Double strain into a champagne coupe. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Here’s to the land of the shamrock so green,

May God bless old Ireland, that’s this Irishman’s toast!
