Fifty years after one of the most influential moments in modern wine history, Kessler Hospitality invited guests to revisit the tasting that forever changed the global perception of American wine.
In partnership with Château Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Kessler commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Judgment of Paris with immersive experiences at two of its premier destinations: JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District in Savannah, Georgia, and Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville in Greenville, South Carolina.
Designed to celebrate discovery, conversation, and the enduring legacy of the historic tasting, the two-day events offered guests the opportunity to challenge their palates through guided blind tastings and a thoughtfully curated ‘Icon Dinner’ honoring the California wineries whose victories changed the industry forever.
Honoring a Defining Moment in Wine
In 1976, a blind tasting in Paris unexpectedly placed California wines ahead of some of France’s most revered producers, proving that excellence could emerge from unexpected places and ushering in a new era for American winemaking.
To commemorate the landmark anniversary, Kessler Hospitality recreated the spirit of the original event through a modern interpretation that encouraged guests to set aside labels and reputations and rely solely on their senses.
Held June 11–12 at JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District and June 19–20 at Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville, the celebrations brought together wine enthusiasts, culinary teams, and representatives from Château Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars for a weekend centered on education and discovery.
The Modern Judgment: A Blind Tasting Experience
The celebration began with a guided blind tasting inspired by the original 1976 Judgment of Paris, inviting guests to experience firsthand the anticipation and discovery that defined the historic competition. American and French wines were presented side by side without labels, encouraging participants to evaluate each wine solely on its aroma, structure, balance, and character.
As they tasted, guests recorded their observations in commemorative tasting passports featuring guided notes and background information on each participating winery. Following the reveal, attendees revisited the wines with newfound context, sparking lively discussion among fellow guests and winery representatives.
Adding depth to the experience, guest sommeliers from Château Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars shared stories from the original Judgment of Paris, offering insights into the pioneering winemakers, the wines that challenged convention, and the lasting impact the tasting had on the global wine industry.
One of the most memorable moments in Savannah came when guests selected Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon as the favorite of the blind tasting, reinforcing the enduring appeal of California wines five decades after the historic competition.
Throughout the experience, chef-crafted bites complemented the featured wines, showcasing the relationship between food and wine while elevating each tasting through thoughtful culinary pairings.
An Evening Dedicated to Wine Icons
The celebration continued with an intimate multi-course Icon Dinner inspired by the wineries whose landmark victories helped redefine global standards of wine excellence.
Thoughtfully crafted by Kessler Hospitality’s culinary teams, the menu drew inspiration from classic French cuisine interpreted through a California lens. Each course was designed to complement the featured wines while honoring the heritage, innovation, and enduring influence of Château Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Throughout the evening, winery representatives guided guests through each pairing, enriching the experience with stories of the wineries, the wines, and the people behind them.
Among the evening’s highlights was a side-by-side tasting of Château Montelena Chardonnay and Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet, offering guests a contemporary perspective on the styles that captivated judges and reshaped the wine world five decades ago.
As the evening unfolded, guests experienced firsthand how wine, cuisine, and storytelling can converge to create something truly memorable. More than a celebration of historic achievements, the dinner served as a tribute to the craftsmanship, curiosity, and pursuit of excellence that continue to define great winemaking today.
A Lasting Tribute to Discovery
Beyond the wines themselves, the experiences reflected Kessler Hospitality’s commitment to creating meaningful moments rooted in culture, education, and connection. Guests departed with commemorative 50th Anniversary Judgment of Paris glassware, a lasting reminder of a weekend dedicated to one of the wine industry’s most influential milestones.
Fifty years after the original Judgment of Paris challenged convention and forever changed the global perception of American wine, Kessler Hospitality’s tribute demonstrated that the spirit of discovery remains as relevant as ever. By inviting guests to taste without preconceptions, engage with the stories behind the wines, and experience the intersection of hospitality and history, the celebrations honored not only a landmark moment in wine culture but also the curiosity and open-mindedness that continue to drive the industry forward.
Through immersive experiences, thoughtful storytelling, and iconic wines, Kessler Hospitality transformed a historic anniversary into a powerful reminder that great discoveries often begin with a willingness to challenge expectations.
