The 90’s Are Back on the Menu: How Nostalgia is Shaping Classic Cocktails

By Mallory Ambrose | October 03, 2024

Nostalgia takes the forefront in 2024. What started as a resurfaced fashion trend of low-rise jeans has now spilled into the world of mixology with a re-emergence of cocktails inspired by the bold flavors and unpretentious presentation of the 90’s and early 2000s.

Identified as a key trend in Datassential’s 2024 FoodBytes Trend Report, US consumers’ demand for nostalgic applications, including the re-imaginings of classic 1990s cocktails, have been a significant driver for flavor and product development throughout 2024. Bartenders are embracing this revival, crafting modern riffs of the generation’s classic cocktails, bringing back cult-favorites like the Cosmopolitan, Appletini, Espresso Martini and more.

Espresso Martini

The undisputed queen of the 90’s cocktail menu (and our hearts), the Espresso Martini has taken the world by storm (again) standing firm as a favorite among those wanting a little pick-me-up on a night out. The martini, a timeless cocktail that has graced bar menus for over a century, sparked a trend in 2021 and has since experienced a remarkable renaissance in 2024. Industry data speaks volumes on the cocktail’s resurgence revealing that Espresso Martinis are currently found on 5% of U.S. menus, up 164% over the past four years.

The Espresso Martini remains one of the most popular cocktails ordered nightly at Bar Stilwell, Loews Kansas City Hotel’s lobby bar and lounge. Made with fresh brewed espresso, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, J Rieger Café Amaro (Local to KC), Kahlúa, Madagascar Vanilla Gifford, and house made demerara syrup, the recipe allows for optimal froth to top off the cocktail garnished with three whole espresso beans to symbolize – health, wealth, and happiness.

The Cosmopolitan

The Quintessential ’90s Cocktail, colloquially known as a ‘cosmo’ – which is a concoction of cranberry juice, vodka, Cointreau and lime juice – first gained popularity due to the hit TV show Sex and the City. The cocktail eventually fizzled out of popularity, replaced by the likes of the Aperol Spritz, Espresso Martini, Frosé, and Negroni Sbagliato, but this season, the Cosmo has emerged once again as a favorite amongst Gen Z and millennials.

Tiki Cocktails

In the world of cocktails, few drinks evoke a sense of fun and escapism quite like Tiki drinks. Tiki cocktails are celebrated not only for their bold flavors but for their ability to create a sense of adventure. The flamboyant presentations of Tiki’ cocktails like the Mai Tai, the Zombie, and the Painkiller have experienced an increased popularity amongst Millennials and Gen Z bar-goers as of late. This resurgence is likely driven by consumers’ growing desire for authentic and immersive experiences. Blending exotic flavors, vibrant presentations and cultural homage, Tiki cocktail’s return to craft and attention to detail resonates strongly with today’s consumers.

The Negroni

In recent times, the Negroni has experienced a resurgence, elevating its status to that of a timeless and iconic cocktail. The classic combination of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth has become a canvas for experimentation, inspiring a wave of creative twists and variations. From barrel-aged Negronis to sparkling Negroni spritzes (Sbagliato anyone?), the rise of Negroni variations reflects a contemporary fascination with reinventing classics, adding a modern flair to a cocktail that has stood the test of time.
